“The Man with the Green Hat”

Where did the man with the green hat go? He was their ticket out of here. He was making some phone calls, trying to sort the whole thing out. He started walking away. Jamal and his friends were talking amongst themselves, not paying attention. When Jamal looked around a few minutes later, the man with the green hat was nowhere to be found.

Jamal and his friends were in town for the jujitsu tournament. NYC held a prestigious tournament every spring, and their coach sent the top five guys from the dojo. Coach couldn’t make the trip, as the younger kids were having a tournament of their own back in South Central. Jamal and his friends were seniors and juniors in high school, and their parents didn’t care one way or another if they were at home or abroad, as long as they didn’t have to pay for anything. Coach covered the costs for the five boys and set them up with a chaperone for the weekend. And now that chaperone was gone, and he had their IDs and plane tickets home. Only Jamal seemed to be worrying about the severity of their situation.

“Yo, Mikey, you see which way Calvin went?”

Mikey shook his head no. Calvin had been a good enough guy the past three days, making sure they were fed and well-rested. They saved all their sightseeing for today, the last day, and they were all tired and ready to get to the airport.
