“Sewage”

I belong among the sewage, but I don’t feel it has been earned. The bald guy in the leather jacket pacing back and forth behind me . . . maybe he’s earned it. But he doesn’t look like he wants to be in it. He wants to be in his own world. Headphones on, the soundtrack of his life. This is what I get for taking my headphones off: the soundtrack of other people’s lives.

We all belong in the sewage. Not all of us came from it, but we all deserve to be in it. We’re all dirty and impure. The rats know it. The rats hope for it. They [hope] we won’t survive, and then they’ll have food to feast on for years. We are all fat gluttons. The rats have fattened us up. They would never admit it; we would never admit it.
