“Pamphlet”

Klaus put on his favorite yellow jacket and checked his hair in the mirror one last time. His blonde hair was slicked back perfectly, and his eyes sparkled as he flashed himself a smile. Looking good, he said to himself. He pulled his black slacks up above his slight belly and pulled the belt in one more loop. He grabbed the pamphlet from the kitchen table and yelled to his mom, who was somewhere in the house doing motherly chores, “I’ll be back later.” She responded with a Be safe, but he was already out the door.

It was an overcast summer day. The clouds were supposed to break by the time the leader was going to talk. This summer had been hot and humid so far, thunderstorms flashing in at the end of every day. But today was a special day that he hoped would be blessed by clear, blue skies.

He had a spring in his step as he walked to the courthouse. Last week, he was sitting on a bench in the town square, reading a newspaper, when he was approached by a couple of dapper-looking gentlemen. They smiled, and one of the men handed Klaus a pamphlet. He said, “have a good day, brother,” and the two men walked away before Klaus could even think of a response. He leafed through the pamphlet, which talked about changing times. Klaus had been feeling, for a while now, that something was missing in his life, so he was curious how the leader could help him.
