“Asleep at the Wheel Again”
Dec 24, 2019My eyes slowly open and everything is blurry. My mouth tastes like a sewer. I look down at my shirt and there’s vomit running down to my lap. I hear the vibrating engine and whooshing of cars going past. My hands grip the steering wheel. 10 and 2.
“Welcome back.” A voice to my right startles me and my hands jerk the steering wheel. The car jerks and I grip the steering wheel. I notice the speedometer: 90 mph.
“What’s going on?” I hear a voice from behind me.
“Seems our capitán fell asleep at the wheel again,” Bill says from the passenger seat.
“Goddamit, Tony,” Al says and kicks my seat.
“What’s going on?” says Lex from next to Al. I look in the rearview mirror and see her yawn.
“Tony fell asleep at the wheel again,” says Al.
“Goddammit, Tony,” says Lex.
“Sorry,” I say. My double vision is becoming single again. Downtown LA looms in front of us. Up ahead, the 10 to 101 interchange.
